As Smith finishes reading, the room fills with laughter. This presentation occurred on February 8th, as the House of Representatives discussed the Civil Rights Act of However, the fight for gender equality was far from over. Of the four thousand claims of sex discrimination in the workplace filed from to , the commission ruled against women workers in almost every case Schomp While the situation looked grim after the bill passed, progress has been made in the fifty years since.
But even with these positive changes, gender inequality remains both in and out of the workplace. While women are permitted to participate, there are obstacles that I, and all other female debaters, must overcome that our male counterparts get a free pass from. Speaker points, a measure of how well a debater articulates his or her arguments, is where this discrimination becomes most visible.
My partner and I, a rare team composed of two females, have been given lower speaker points for a variety of gendered reasons.

Though speaker points are subjective, it is clear that some judges impose gender stereotypes in their measurements of my abilities as a debater. Despite my experiences of unfairness in debate because of my gender, I recognize the importance of the Civil Rights Act of and the positive changes it has brought to American society.
Social and Political Discrimination Against Women
Title VII has led to new job opportunities for women and gives them legal protection from sex discrimination, as they have a way to challenge their sexist employers and coworkers. This commitment continues today, as President Obama recently announced his goal to achieve income equality for men and women. Though I have a few years before I enter the workforce, I can thank the 88th Congress for legal protection from gender inequality.
Many countries and nations have issued legislations against discrimination, and specifically against gender or sex discrimination. Many countries and nations have acts against discriminating women; however, women are still being discriminated before the law Franciscans. Discriminating against women is not just discriminating against a person it is discriminating against families as well; who would want the mother, the sister or the wife to be discriminated at work, at school or at club under no reason but solely because of the gender.
The purpose of this essay is to examine the act of discrimination against women and demonstrate on how women suffer in the social life, the political arena and the workplace, and the education. Moreover this essay will adjudge the previous solutions to overcome the problem of discriminating women due to their gender held previously decades ago by countries or nations, and why they did not reap what they have sown.
Ultimately, it will propose a solution on how to surmount the problem of discriminating women, because women should not be discriminated due to the prejudice against their gender. Women play the part of half the human race if they were less competent or reliable than men and do not deserve equality God would not let them share every role with men. Women suffer from discrimination, violence and sexual harassment because women most of the times are thought to be less competent than men because of their physical structure. Thus it is a problem that needs more that attention to be solved.
Therefore, we do not need each developed country telling a one that is not that the developed country is free from discrimination or it is in very small ratio that discrimination hardly can be found.

Statistically according to figure 1, the ratio between the Middle East and North Africa MENA and the developing countries does not gap critically; life expectancy is more in MENA than in the developing countries while it decreases in the other areas. The world needs all countries and nations help because it is not a one nation problem it is a problem that we all command.
Women social life is covered by many kinds of discrimination. Women in social life suffer from many daily-life appellations, especially in the Middle-East other than the West. In the Middle-East women are classified by their relationship status other than by her contribution to the community. In the process of searching, most of the men search for virgin girls whether those men have previous relation or not.
Divorced women are treated different than married women. The Equal Rights Amendment Is Re-Introduced Then, in , the Equal Rights Amendment, which had languished in Congress for almost fifty years, was finally passed and sent to the states for ratification. Unlike so many other issues which were battled-out in Congress or through the courts, this issue came to each state to decide individually.

Marches were staged in key states that brought out hundreds of thousands of supporters. House meetings, walk-a-thons, door-to-door canvassing, and events of every imaginable kind were held by ordinary women, many of whom had never done anything political in their lives before. But Elizabeth Cady Stanton proved prophetic once again.
Opponents of the Equal Rights Amendment, organized by Phyllis Schlafly, feared that a statement like the ERA in the Constitution would give the government too much control over our personal lives. They charged that passage of the ERA would lead to men abandoning their families, unisex toilets, gay marriages, and women being drafted. And the media, purportedly in the interest of balanced reporting, gave equal weight to these deceptive arguments just as they had when the possibility of women winning voting rights was being debated.
And, just like had happened with woman suffrage, there were still very few women in state legislatures to vote their support, so male legislators once again had it in their power to decide if women should have equal rights. When the deadline for ratification came in , the ERA was just three states short of the 38 needed to write it into the U.
Despite polls consistently showing a large majority of the population supporting the ERA, it was considered by many politicians to be just too controversial. Allowing women to go to college? That would shrink their reproductive organs! Employ women in jobs for pay outside their homes? That would destroy families! Cast votes in national elections? Why should they bother themselves with such matters? Participate in sports?
No lady would ever want to perspire!
These and other issues that were once considered scandalous and unthinkable are now almost universally accepted in this country. Much of the discussion has moved beyond the issue of equal rights and into territory that is controversial, even among feminists. To name a few:.
Whatever choices we make for our own lives, most of us envision a world for our daughters, nieces and granddaughters where all girls and women will have the opportunity to develop their unique skills and talents and pursue their dreams. Not only have women won the right to vote; we are being elected to public office at all levels of government. Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to Congress, in By , three generations later, women were still less than three percent of our congressional representatives.
In the world of work, large numbers of women have entered the professions, the trades, and businesses of every kind. We have opened the ranks of the clergy, the military, the newsroom. The remaining injustices are being tackled daily in the courts and conference rooms, the homes and organizations, workplaces and playing fields of America. Each of us puts in one little stone, and then you get a great mosaic at the end.
